The US Geography Olympiad held its 2017 Varsity and Junior Varsity National Championships at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA on Friday, April 21. After the Map Exam, the Written Exam, and Multiple Choice Exam had been taken by 92 Varsity and 85 JV students, Kyle Yu of Westlake High School, Westlake, OH and Avi Goel, Merryhill Middle School, Milpitas, CA emerged as our respective 2017 Varsity and JV National Champions! Congratulations to them and to all students who qualified for and competed at Nationals!
In addition to Kyle, congratulations to Jakob Myers (Naperville North HS, Naperville, IL), AJ Manning (Bartow IB High School, Bartow, FL), and Martin Rakowszczyk (Wootton HS, Wootton, MD) – as 2nd-4th place Varsity finishers (listed here in that order), Jakob, AJ, and Martin join Kyle win the right to represent Team USA at the 2017 International Geography Olympiad (aka iGeo) in Belgrade, Serbia! Jakob and AJ competed on Team USA last year as well with AJ being a gold medalist and the 8th highest finisher of over 160 students at the 2016 iGeo.
