(Krakow, Poland – August 18, 2014) A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO JAMES MULLEN OF MONTA VISTA HIGH SCHOOL (Cupertino, CA) – WORLD CHAMPION AT THE 2014 INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHY OLYMPIAD!!! 144 of the best geography students from around the world convened in Krakow this past week for a week of competition in fieldwork, and written and multiple choice exams. Out of the best in the world, James took first place, and he was also the only student to finish in the top 10 (he in fact, was in the top 6) in all three events that constituted the competition. Anton Karpovich of the Illinois Math and Science Academy, from Hoffman Estates, IL took home a silver (Anton won bronze in 2013 in Japan) and Tine Valencic of Grapevine High School in Grapevine, TX won bronze. David Yuan of Lexington High School in Lexington, MA helped round out Team USA which finished 10th overall out of 36 teams. That compares with 14th out of 32 teams at our first showing at the International Geography Olympiad in Kyoto in 2013. Congratulations to Team USA from USGO for an amazing job!
